Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, recently discharged from the hospital after a complex intestinal surgery, led a rally in Brasília attended by around 3,000 supporters demanding amnesty for those convicted of the January 2023 attempted coup-just one week after the progressive government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office.
Amnesty as a Political Strategy
The far-right-backed bill proposes amnesty for all individuals involved in demonstrations from October 2022 until the law’s enactment, benefiting not only those implicated in the violent assault on the branches of government but also thousands who called for a coup to block Lula’s inauguration. However, the initiative faces strong opposition in Congress and lacks sufficient support to move forward.
Despite being barred from holding public office until 2030, Bolsonaro was hailed at the rally as a future president, demonstrating the persistence of his far-right dangerous base and the mobilization of conservative sectors, including evangelical pastors who actively participated. The march, described by supporters as “peaceful,” aimed to pressure Congress to endorse the amnesty.
Nearly 1,600 people have been charged by Brazilian courts for their roles in the coup attempt, with over 550 already sentenced to prison terms ranging up to 17 years. Bolsonaro himself faces charges as the alleged mastermind behind the coup, alongside several former collaborators. The amnesty could open a dangerous path toward impunity for these actors.
Speeches at the rally were filled with attacks on Lula, labeling him “communist” and “corrupt,” while denying the existence of a coup and framing the events as a legitimate expression of dissatisfaction. This narrative seeks to delegitimize the legitimate government and bolster the far-right agenda.

Implications for Brazilian Democracy
The push for amnesty for coup participants poses a direct threat to democracy and the rule of law in Brazil, endangering the country’s political and social stability. Congressional resistance is crucial to prevent normalizing impunity for anti-democratic acts.
This event highlights the ongoing strength of far-right forces in Brazil and underscores the importance of defending democratic gains achieved under Lula’s government, amid a context where justice and politics intertwine in the struggle for the country’s future.
